A change of plan….
Unfortunately, due to lack of numbers, our trip to the Somme in April has been cancelled. The good news is that we have been able to switch to another excellent Leger tour departing the same weekend, so this year’s trip will now be:
This tour looks at the extensive use of tunnelling and mines throughout Belgium and northern France during the Great War, and includes visits to several sites around Flanders, plus a day on the Somme, so all is not lost!
As an added bonus, we’re also making a return visit to Ypres. Do we ever tire of this place? No chance.
The battlefield visits include:
Hill 60, Caterpillar Crater, Vampire Farm, the Passchendaele War Museum at Zonnebeke , Hooge, the Messines Ridge, the Ploegsteert Memorial , and of course the Last Post Ceremony in Ypres. On the second day we travel to the Somme, where, by special arrangement, we will visit the caves under the village church at Bouzencourt, which were extended by British tunnellers and used for troop accommodation.
We’ll also visit the Tunnellers graves at Becourt, look at the story of the Livens Flame Projector, and visit the scene of the famous Hawthorn Mine at Beaumont-Hamel, before ending the tour with a return visit to the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
